Overall, I have a total of 13 years of teaching experience, six full years in linguistics and seven full years in first-year composition. I have taught in public and private universities, including both two- and four-year community college and college settings. I also have six years of student mentoring experience in linguistics.

  • Language, Gender, and Sexuality in the US

Previously, I have taught linguistics courses at The Ohio State University, Northern Illinois University, University of Illinois at Chicago, North Central College, and Rice University. These courses include:

  • Language, Race, and Ethnicity (OSU, NCC)
  • Language, Gender, and Sexuality (OSU)

Each of these courses focuses on fostering an appreciation of regional, social, and ethnic dialect awareness and diversity among students.

In 2010, I received an Undergraduate Teaching Award from the Department of Linguistics for exceptional teaching of these courses during the course of my time as an instructor at the Ohio State University.

Mentoring: Linguistics

In addition, I was actively involved in mentoring undergraduate students via my involvement in the Ohio State University Department of Linguistics Undergraduate Internship Program. Between 2005 and 2010, I mentored 8 undergraduates, 7 of whom have worked with me on my Century of Language Change in Columbus (CLCC) and Central Ohio Dialect Survey projects.

More recently, during academic year 2017-2018, I mentored a group of five undergraduate teaching assistants while teaching a large, 150-seat section of “Introduction to Linguistics” at Rice University. In addition, I mentored a 6th undergraduate teaching assistant, who worked with me as a grader in my “Phonetics” course at Rice.

Teaching: Composition
