Teaching Experience

Overall, I have a total of 15 years of teaching experience, with seven full years in linguistics and eight full years in first-year composition. I have taught in public and private universities, including both two- and four-year community college and college settings. I also have seven years of student mentoring experience in linguistics. To date,  I have taught at a total of 10 institutions.

Teaching: Linguistics

Thus far, in linguistics, I have taught a variety of courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Since 2018, I am teaching 5 different courses in linguistics at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. These courses are:

  • Language and Social Interaction
  • The Structure of English
  • English Grammars and Usage
  • Topics in Linguistics (Language, Gender & Sexuality)
  • Independent Study in Linguistics (Topic varies)

Previously, I have taught linguistics courses at Rice University, The Ohio State University, University of Illinois at Chicago, Northern Illinois University,  and North Central College. These courses include:

  • Introduction to Linguistics (OSU, Rice, NIU)
  • Language, Race, and Ethnicity (OSU, NCC)
  • Sociolinguistics (Rice)
  • Language and Social Identity in the USA (OSU)
  • Dialects of Ohio (OSU)
  • Language, Gender, and Sexuality (OSU)
  • Phonetics (Rice)
  • Sociolinguistic Field Methods (UIC–Co-Taught with Richard Cameron)

Each of these courses focuses on fostering an appreciation of regional, social, and ethnic dialect awareness and diversity among students.

In 2010, I received an Undergraduate Teaching Award from the Department of Linguistics for exceptional teaching of these courses during the course of my time as an instructor at the Ohio State University.

Mentoring: Linguistics

In addition, I am active in the mentoring undergraduate students at Bloomsburg, both by serving as a research mentor for students completing Independent Study and Capstone Research, and as a teaching mentor for Student Learning Leaders (SLL). Thus far, I have mentored 3 research projects and 1 SLL. These include projects on Variation in Black American Sign Language, Linguistic Variation in the Political Rhetoric of Donald Trump, and English Dialect Variation in Williamsport, PA. The SLL I have mentored helped me with teaching “English Grammars and Usage.”

Before coming to Bloomsburg, I was also actively involved in mentoring undergraduate students via my involvement in the Ohio State University Department of Linguistics Undergraduate Internship Program. Between 2005 and 2010, I mentored 8 undergraduates, 7 of whom have worked with me on my Century of Language Change in Columbus (CLCC) and Central Ohio Dialect Survey projects.

During academic year 2017-2018, I mentored a group of five undergraduate teaching assistants while teaching a large, 150-seat section of “Introduction to Linguistics” at Rice University. In addition, I mentored a 6th undergraduate teaching assistant, who worked with me as a grader in my “Phonetics” course at Rice.
